When it comes to interior design, I’ve never been big on patterns. Instead, I’m drawn to overall shapes and textures that are layered to tell a story. Balancing elevated visual interest with a sense of calm is my jam, through and through. After collaborating with Transition State (see prior posts here and here) on the core pieces throughout our home 2 years ago (gosh, time flies!), to keep my design passion alive in small ways, I’m consistently searching for tiny accents to refresh vignettes and make some noise (at the appropriate decibel level).
Though I’ve personally never thought of myself as a design traditionalist, I’ve been increasingly enamored with check patterns. Sometimes it’s just a classic check, other times it’s a play on the design itself, and most often it’s more subtle based on the color palette or organic execution.
I’ve had such a strong craving for checks recently that I had to share, and as I started drafting this post, I was even more excited by the fact that my favorite check destinations happen to all be female-founded. A win-win.
One of the beloved (and useful) check accents in our home is our Curio Practice blanket. I featured it in one of my female-founded holiday gift guides and it was the most clicked on product by far. I highly recommend this snuggly piece as it provides warmth and a nice bit of heft.
London-based ceramicist, Rosie Gore, creates hand-painted vases, platters, plates, and lampshades in an assortment of gorgeous colors.
Elemental Echo, a ceramics studio out of Barcelona founded by Helen Savina, creates stunning matte ceramics that she sells through Etsy. The assortment is always evolving and the execution is nothing short of perfect.
Self Rooted Care Ceramics based in Brooklyn, crafted by a woman named Caroline, offers beautiful, organic check patterns across cups, mugs, and other decor.
Tori West of Tori West Ceramics creates pottery in her basement and her designs seem to always have a playful twist.
Alicja Bozena out of Vermont offers a nice variety of check colors and designs on her Etsy store, Alicja Ceramics. I’m especially drawn to the white glossy glaze on raw clay.
KUFRI, founded by Mili Suleman, is focused on delivering beautiful, heirloom-quality textiles created by women artisans. The fabrics and pillows make for eye-catching home additions.
Cheers to checks, forever and always.
